Captain Matt Hungerford

Hello everyone, my name is Captain Matt Hungerford, and I’m the founder of Clearly Unique Charters, Islamorada’s premier snorkeling and sandbar tour company. Originally from Biloxi, Mississippi, I’ve always lived on the water and embraced every aspect of marine life. My journey began in 1992 when I started fishing and diving, leading to my captain’s license in 1996. I initially worked on oil field boats before transitioning to private yacht charters and luxury boat tours.

In 1997, I earned my private pilot license to expand my exploration range across the US, Bahamas, and Caribbean waters. By 1998, I purchased my first cruising sailboat, using these combined skills to travel, live, and discover the world’s most pristine marine environments.

During the summer of 2009, while sailing through the Bahamas, I decided to head west toward Central America with a planned stopover in Key West. Nearly sixteen years later, I’m still here! The Florida Keys captured my heart, and I discovered this incredible destination offers something special for everyone who loves life on the water.

I revolutionized the traditional charter business by introducing eco-tours through the National Wildlife Refuge using crystal-clear kayaks I first encountered in the Caribbean. Combining my pilot training and exploration expertise, I identified the best snorkeling spots and sandbar locations based on wind patterns, tidal conditions, and seasonal marine life activity. I selected a high-speed, stable, twin-hulled powerboat specifically designed to reach remote snorkeling reefs and pristine sandbars that other half-day tour operators simply cannot access.
In 2017, we recognized an incredible opportunity to expand our big boat operations to Islamorada, so I relocated everything and haven’t looked back since! Our signature snorkeling and sandbar tours have become the most popular private charter experience in town, and our passion for sharing Islamorada’s underwater treasures with visitors drives everything we do.
