Islamorada offers spectacular waterborne wedding and proposal settings that combine natural beauty with intimate atmosphere. Our private charters provide access to pristine sandbars for beach-style ceremonies, position on the Gulf of America for sunset proposals, and create customized experiences where every detail reflects your vision for this once-in-a-lifetime moment.
Why Choose Islamorada for Your Wedding or Proposal
Islamorada delivers what destination wedding couples seek: stunning natural beauty, year-round warm weather, accessibility from major cities, and a relaxed Keys atmosphere that puts everyone at ease. The combination of turquoise water, white sandbars, and spectacular sunsets creates built-in beauty that requires minimal decoration.
Unlike crowded Key West or isolated Lower Keys locations, Islamorada provides the sweet spot of natural beauty with convenient access. Your guests can reach us easily, accommodations range from luxury resorts to charming boutiques, and the area offers enough activities to justify a destination trip without overwhelming small-town charm.
Sandbar Wedding Ceremonies
Our most popular wedding option involves ceremonies on pristine Islamorada sandbars where crystal-clear, waist-deep water surrounds you in every direction and no other boats or people intrude on your moment.
What Makes Sandbar Ceremonies Special
Imagine exchanging vows while standing in ankle-deep turquoise water on white sand, with nothing but ocean and sky in every direction. The natural beauty requires no decoration beyond perhaps a simple arch or floral arrangement. The intimate scale keeps focus on what matters – you, your partner, and the commitment you’re making.
Our private charters transport you, your officiant, and up to 49 guests (or up to 80 with multiple boats) to exclusive sandbar locations. The journey there becomes part of the experience, with dolphins sometimes appearing and excitement building as the sandbar comes into view.
Ceremony Logistics
The sandbar ceremony format works beautifully because logistics are simpler than traditional venues. Guests arrive at our departure location, board the boat together, and travel to the sandbar as a group. This shared journey creates bonding and anticipation that traditional venues don’t provide.
Once at the sandbar, everyone can wade around freely. The warm, shallow water means guests feel comfortable and relaxed. Elderly relatives and children both enjoy the setting. The natural amphitheater effect of the sandbar means everyone has clear views without formal seating arrangements.
Timing and Duration
Most sandbar ceremonies run 3-4 hours total, including travel time, ceremony, and celebration time at the sandbar afterward. This gives everyone time to take photos, enjoy the environment, and truly experience the location rather than rushing through.
We can extend duration if you want more time, or coordinate with sunset timing if you prefer golden hour lighting. Captain Matt’s knowledge of seasonal patterns and daily conditions helps us select optimal timing for your specific date.
Sunset Proposal Experiences
Our sunset cruises provide the perfect setting for marriage proposals, combining spectacular natural beauty with romantic timing and intimate atmosphere.
Why Sunset Proposals Work
There’s something inherently romantic about sunset, and proposing as the sun drops into the Gulf of America creates a moment your partner will remember forever. The changing light, the peaceful time on the water, and the privacy of being away from crowds all contribute to the magic.
We can customize the experience around your proposal plans. Want champagne ready at the perfect moment? We’ll have it chilled and waiting. Need us to position the boat at a specific sandbar so you can propose there? We’ll coordinate timing perfectly. Want the crew to discretely capture photos? We can arrange that too.
Proposal Timing Strategies
The best proposal timing depends on your partner’s personality and your relationship. Some people prefer the proposal to happen early in the cruise so they can enjoy the rest of the time celebrating. Others want to build anticipation and propose at the moment of sunset.
We’ve helped with dozens of proposals over our nearly 15 years in business. Captain Matt can offer suggestions based on his experience, but ultimately you know your partner best and we’ll support whatever timing feels right to you.
Permits and Regulations
Florida Keys weddings and proposals on the water involve some regulatory considerations, though they’re generally straightforward.
What You Need
For the ceremony itself, you’ll need an officiant licensed to perform marriages in Florida. Many officiants are familiar with destination weddings and can handle the paperwork requirements. You’ll also need a Florida marriage license, which requires both parties to appear in person at a Florida county clerk’s office.
The good news: Monroe County (which includes all of Islamorada) makes this easy. You can obtain your license at the Key West office or satellite locations, and there’s no waiting period in Florida. The license is valid for 60 days from issuance.
Sandbar Regulations
The sandbars we visit are in public waters within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. No special permits are required for small ceremonies, though we follow all sanctuary regulations regarding mooring, waste disposal, and environmental protection.
Large events might require additional coordination, which we’ll help you understand based on your specific guest count and plans.
Guest Capacity and Multi-Boat Options
The number of guests you’re planning affects which vessel options work best for your ceremony or celebration.
Intimate Weddings (Up to 20 Guests)
For smaller weddings, our 38-foot Beachcat or 45-foot Corinthian provides comfortable capacity with room for everyone to move around freely. The intimate scale keeps focus on the ceremony while providing enough space that nobody feels crowded.
Medium Weddings (20-49 Guests)
Our largest single vessel accommodates up to 49 passengers comfortably. This size works well for many destination weddings where you’re inviting close family and friends but not attempting to transport your entire hometown to the Keys.
Large Weddings (50-80 Guests)
For larger celebrations, we coordinate two vessels that travel together to the ceremony location. This approach works beautifully because both boats arrive at the same time, and the slight separation actually helps with logistics like loading and unloading at the sandbar.
Photography Considerations
Your wedding or proposal photos will be treasured forever, so thinking through photography logistics helps ensure you capture everything perfectly.
Bringing Your Own Photographer
Professional photographers are welcome on our charters and we work with them regularly. Make sure your photographer is comfortable on boats and in water – sandbar ceremonies involve wading, and equipment needs to stay dry while the photographer might get wet.
We can coordinate timing and positioning to give photographers optimal lighting and backgrounds. Captain Matt’s knowledge of how light works at different times and locations helps us maximize photo opportunities.
Drone Photography
Aerial drone shots of sandbar ceremonies create stunning images that capture the full scope of the setting. If your photographer wants to use a drone, mention this during planning so we can discuss any logistics or restrictions that might apply.
What to Wear for Water-Based Weddings
Sandbar ceremonies require different clothing considerations than traditional venue weddings.
For Brides
Many brides choose shorter wedding dresses or separate skirts that won’t drag in water. Barefoot is traditional for sandbar ceremonies, though water shoes work if you prefer. Consider having a simple ceremony dress and changing into something more elaborate for reception if you’re having one after.
Keep in mind that boat travel and beach settings mean updos often work better than flowing hair styles that wind can dishevel. Talk with your stylist about styles that photograph beautifully but remain secure in light breezes.
For Grooms and Guests
Grooms typically wear light-colored suits or even just dress shirts and pants, going barefoot like the bride. Guests should understand they’ll be wading in water and dress accordingly – beach formal works perfectly. Light fabrics, shorter hemlines, and bare feet create the right Keys wedding aesthetic.
Coordination With Other Vendors
Successful waterborne weddings require coordination among multiple vendors working in an unusual setting.
Officiants
Choose an officiant experienced with beach and boat weddings who understands the logistics and won’t be thrown off by unconventional settings. We can suggest officiants who’ve performed ceremonies on our charters if you need recommendations.
Florists and Decorators
Minimal decoration works best for sandbar ceremonies. The natural beauty is the main feature, and elaborate setups are difficult in this environment. Simple touches like a floral arch, bouquets, and boutonnieres are plenty.
Keep in mind everything travels by boat, so decorations need to be boat-friendly and secure during transport. Work with your florist to create arrangements that can handle a boat ride without falling apart.
Catering
We provide beverages on all charters, but you can arrange for food to be brought aboard for celebration after the ceremony. Keep it simple – passed appetizers or small bites work better than elaborate plated meals. If you’re planning a full reception, consider having it at a restaurant after returning from the ceremony.

Reception Options
Most couples having sandbar ceremonies either keep the celebration simple on the boat or plan separate receptions at Islamorada restaurants or resorts.
On-Boat Celebrations
After your sandbar ceremony, you can celebrate aboard the boat with champagne toasts, appetizers, and music while cruising or anchored. This works well for couples wanting intimate celebrations with just their closest people.
Restaurant Receptions
Many Islamorada restaurants can accommodate wedding receptions for groups of various sizes. This gives you both the special ceremony setting on the water and a traditional reception experience afterward. The combination often works better than trying to do everything on the boat.
Proposal Package Options
Our sunset cruise proposals can be enhanced with special touches that make the moment even more memorable.
What We Can Arrange
Champagne service, floral arrangements, specific music played at the right moment, positioning at special locations – we customize based on what will make your proposal perfect. Some clients want elaborate setups while others prefer simple, spontaneous moments. Both approaches work beautifully.
After-Proposal Celebrations
Once she says yes, the rest of the cruise becomes your first time together as an engaged couple. Many clients continue to sunset viewing, then make dinner reservations at special Islamorada restaurants to celebrate further. We’re happy to recommend restaurants and help coordinate timing.
Combining With Guest Experiences
If you’re bringing guests to Islamorada for your wedding, our other tours provide excellent experiences for them during their stay.
Book our snorkeling and sandbar combo tours for guests the day before or after the wedding. This gives everyone a chance to experience Islamorada’s waters together and creates additional bonding opportunities beyond just the ceremony itself.
Planning Timeline
Popular dates, especially winter months and holiday weekends, book far in advance for destination weddings.
12+ Months Out
For major weddings during peak season, contact us a year or more ahead to secure your preferred date. This timeline also gives guests time to plan travel and accommodations.
6-12 Months Out
Most couples book 6-12 months ahead for good date selection without extreme advance planning. This works well for moderate guest counts and flexible date preferences.
3-6 Months Out
Smaller weddings and proposals can often be accommodated with a few months notice, especially if you have flexibility on dates and times.
Last Minute
We’ve pulled together beautiful proposals with just weeks notice, and sometimes even shorter timeframes work. Contact us regardless of your timeline – we’ll do everything possible to make your special moment happen.
Why Choose Clearly Unique Charters
What distinguishes our wedding and proposal charters is genuine care about your special moment. Captain Matt’s nearly 30 years on these waters means he knows how to position for optimal light, where to find privacy, and how to read conditions that create perfect settings.
Our family-oriented approach extends to weddings and proposals. We treat your celebration with the same care we’d want for our own family’s special moments.
